Robert Toto

Robert Toto, M.D., holds the Mary M. Conroy Professorship in Kidney Disease and is a Professor of Internal Medicine and Clinical Sciences at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He serves as Associate Dean of Clinical and Translational Research in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Director of the Center for Translational Medicine, and Medical Director of the Multi-Specialty Clinic at UT Southwestern. Dr. Toto is also a Distinguished Teaching Professor, reflecting his extensive contributions to medical education.

His education includes a medical degree from the University of Illinois Medical School, followed by internal medicine residency at the University of Michigan and Baylor College of Medicine. He completed nephrology fellowships at the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital and UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Research interests focus on kidney disease prevention, hypertension management, and dialysis outcomes. His lab leads major clinical trials like the Hemodialysis Study (NIH-sponsored) and the African American Study of Kidney Disease and Hypertension (AASK). He also investigates lipid disorders in renal disease and cost-effectiveness of renal treatments.

Dr. Toto’s awards include recognition as a D Magazine Best Doctor (since 2009) and Texas Monthly Super Doctor. He has authored over 100 articles and serves on editorial boards of journals such as Journal of the American Society of Nephrology and Kidney International. His work emphasizes translational science, bridging clinical practice and research to improve patient outcomes.
