Miguel Vazquez

Miguel Vazquez, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center and Clinical Chief of the Nephrology Division. He also serves as Chief of Nephrology at Parkland Hospital. Dr. Vazquez specializes in managing chronic kidney disease (CKD), end-stage kidney disease, and kidney transplant recipients. His research focuses on pragmatic clinical trials to improve CKD care and blood pressure control for cognitive decline prevention, as well as precision medicine initiatives like the Kidney Precision Medicine Project.

Education: B.S. from University of Puerto Rico (summa cum laude), M.D. from University of Puerto Rico, residency in internal medicine, and nephrology fellowship at UT Southwestern.

Research Interests: Chronic kidney disease management, large-scale clinical trials, kidney transplant outcomes, and reducing disparities in CKD care. Current projects include the ID-Pieces trial evaluating collaborative care models for CKD, diabetes, and hypertension, and collaborations with Parkland and other health systems.

Honors: Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology, Fellow of the American College of Physicians. Active in professional organizations including the National Kidney Foundation and Texas Medical Association.

Administrative Roles: Leads the Nephrology Division and oversees nephrology services at Parkland Hospital. Collaborates on multi-institutional trials and policy initiatives addressing undocumented patients' dialysis access and healthcare equity.

Labs/Teams: Directs the Miguel Vazquez Lab focusing on CKD comorbidity management and translational research. Engaged with the Kidney Precision Medicine Project consortium.
