Robert Stickgold is a Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He founded and directed Harvard's Center for Sleep and Cognition for two decades, establishing himself as a leading figure in sleep and cognitive neuroscience research.
- Education: B.A. in Biochemistry (Harvard), Ph.D. in Biochemistry (University of Wisconsin-Madison), postdocs in Neurochemistry (Stanford) and Neurophysiology (Harvard).
His research explores how sleep facilitates memory consolidation, learning, and cognitive flexibility, with notable work on REM sleep's role in problem-solving and emotional memory processing. Publications span journals like Nature Neuroscience and Science, focusing on sleep's restorative effects and clinical applications (e.g., EMDR).
Recent publications highlight trends in sleep-dependent memory, REM sleep dynamics, and cognitive recovery mechanisms, demonstrating interdisciplinary contributions to neuroscience, psychology, and psychiatry.
Scientific Awards
- 2013 Faculty Award for Excellence in Research, Teaching, and Mentorship (HMS Dept. of Psychiatry, BIDMC)
- 2024 Harvard Medical School Division of Sleep Medicine Prize
Stickgold has served as a preceptor for the T-32 grant since 2004 and held leadership roles in Harvard's Psychiatry Research Committee and Mind, Brain, and Behavior Standing Committee.
His lab, the Center for Sleep and Cognition, investigates sleep's role in neurobiological processes, while advisory roles at Philips Respironics and Eight Sleep reflect his translational impact.
