Itamar Lerner, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), where he leads the Sleep and Memory Computational Lab. His research integrates cognitive neuroscience and computational modeling to investigate sleep's role in memory consolidation, emotional regulation, and pathological conditions like PTSD.
- Ph.D., Computational Neuroscience, Hebrew University of Jerusalem
- B.A., Psychobiology, Hebrew University of Jerusalem
Dr. Lerner's research explores:
- How slow-wave sleep and REM sleep differentially affect pattern recognition and emotional memory processing
- Computational models of hippocampal-cortical interaction during sleep
- Mobile sleep monitoring validation for home use
- Neurocognitive mechanisms of false memory formation and creativity
His 15 most recent publications (2025-2017) span sleep physiology, mental health, cognitive modeling, and neurotechnology, with methodological innovations in EEG, fMRI, and transcranial stimulation. He received the prestigious NSF CAREER Award (2023) for longitudinal studies on sleep's role in stress regulation. Current lab members include Ph.D. candidates in Psychology/Neuroscience, Master's students, and interdisciplinary trainees from neuroscience, psychiatry, and computational fields.
