Robert Stanton

Robert Stanton is an Associate Professor at Central Queensland University's School of Health, Medical and Applied Sciences, affiliated with the Appleton Institute. He holds roles as the Head of Cluster for the Research Cluster for Resilience and Wellbeing (CReW), Chair of the Human Ethics Research Committee, and Co-Champion of the RHD Supervisor Community of Practice. He has over 30 years of experience in sport, health, and mental healthcare sectors, transitioning from private practice to academia in 2012. His research focuses on exercise interventions for mental health and physical healthcare of individuals with mental illnesses, with notable contributions to telehealth applications, coercive interventions in mental health care, and AI ethics in clinical practice.

Stanton earned his BHMSc (Hons) and PhD from Central Queensland University and University of Canberra. His work emphasizes bridging clinical and academic contexts, collaborating with organizations like Exercise and Sports Science Australia. He has supervised multiple PhD and Master’s candidates, focusing on topics like coercive interventions in mental health nursing and physical health nurse consultant roles.

His awards include the 2015 ESSA Medal for his doctoral research on exercise in inpatient mental health settings. Key publications address AI ethics in clinical exercise physiology, nurse-led interventions, and physical activity promotion for musculoskeletal pain. Stanton champions multidisciplinary approaches to address mental health multimorbidity and advocates for improved physical health care in mental health services.
