Robert A. Schwartz is a University Distinguished Professor and Marvin M. Speiser Professor of Finance at the Zicklin School of Business, Baruch College, CUNY. He joined Baruch in 1997 after a long tenure at NYU’s Stern School of Business (1965-1997). His expertise lies in financial economics, particularly securities market structure, liquidity, volatility, and price discovery.
- Education: Ph.D. and M.B.A. in Economics (Columbia University), B.A. in English Literature and Writing (NYU).
Research Focus: Schwartz’s work examines equity market microstructure, trading systems, and regulatory frameworks. His recent articles address liquidity persistence, call auction mechanics, and the interplay of technology, regulation, and market quality. He has advocated for liquidity programs to stabilize markets and analyzed HFT’s role in liquidity provision.
Scientific Honors: Recipient of the World Federation of Exchanges’ inaugural Award for Excellence (2009), Bernard Baruch Distinguished Faculty Award (2015), and multiple Lirtzman Awards. Listed in Who’s Who in the World and related fields.
Leadership: Co-founder of the Robert A. Schwartz Center for Trading and Financial Markets Research (2018). Served on Nasdaq’s Economic Advisory Board (1995-1999) and as chair (1995-1997). Active as associate editor for journals like Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting.
