Dr. Robert Schneider is a Professor of Urban Planning at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), specializing in sustainable transportation, pedestrian safety, and travel behavior. He holds leadership roles in the Transportation Research Board and has collaborated with municipalities like Milwaukee and organizations such as the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. With over 20 years of experience, he has authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles and won multiple awards for his research on pedestrian and bicycle transportation safety. His current projects include the FlexRide Milwaukee microtransit pilot and systemic pedestrian safety analyses.
Education: Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning from UC Berkeley (2011), Master of Regional Planning from UNC Chapel Hill (2001), and B.A. from Augustana College (1999).
Research focuses on pedestrian safety (e.g., nighttime fatalities, crash classification), travel behavior modeling (e.g., Theory of Routine Mode Choice), and policy implementation (e.g., Complete Streets). Key contributions include the National Roadway Safety Strategy-cited pedestrian fatality hotspots study and tools like the Pedestrian Index of the Environment (PIE).
