Robert S. Boyd is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Auburn University's College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM), where he also serves as Assistant Provost for Institutional Effectiveness and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. He has been a faculty member since 1988, progressing through the academic ranks and contributing significantly to institutional leadership and graduate education.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Botany, University of California, Davis (1986)
- M.S. in Biology, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (1979)
- B.S. in Biology (summa cum laude), California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (1977)
- A.A. in Pre-medicine, Mount San Antonio College (1974)
Dr. Boyd's research focuses on the ecology of metal hyperaccumulation in plants and the conservation of rare Southeastern U.S. plant species. His work integrates plant physiology, chemical ecology, and conservation biology, particularly in ultramafic and fire-prone ecosystems. He teaches courses in Conservation Biology, Ecology, and Plant-Animal Interactions at both undergraduate and graduate levels, emphasizing experiential learning and scientific communication.
His recent publications (2017–2020) reflect a strong interdisciplinary approach, combining plant conservation, ecological botany, and scientific writing pedagogy. Themes include seed cryopreservation, floral biology of endangered legumes, nickel-based plant defenses, and fire-adapted germination. These works highlight his commitment to both fundamental ecological research and practical conservation solutions.
Scientific Awards and Honors:
- AU Alumni Professor (2017–2021)
- Gerald and Emily Leischuck Endowed President Award for Excellence in Teaching (2016)
- AU College of Sciences and Mathematics Dean’s Faculty Service/Outreach Award (2019)
- Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award, AU Graduate School (2010)
- Multiple AU Alumni Undergraduate Teaching Excellence Awards
Dr. Boyd has held significant academic leadership roles, including Undergraduate Program Officer and Interim Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences. He has advised numerous students and led curriculum development in conservation biology. His grants and collaborative projects involve plant conservation with federal and botanical institutions. He was a Mellon Visiting Scholar at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden and Claremont Graduate University, reflecting his national engagement in plant conservation science.
He is actively involved in research labs and teams focused on plant ecology and conservation, working with colleagues on seed biology, metal hyperaccumulation, and rare species propagation. His work supports ex situ conservation and ecological restoration, particularly in the Southeastern United States.
