Robert Rollock (1555–1599) was the first Regent (1583) and first Principal (1586) of the University of Edinburgh. He served as Professor of Theology, shaping theological education through rigorous scriptural analysis. Educated at St Andrews University (MA 1577), he specialized in theology, Hebrew, and biblical philology before his appointment at Edinburgh.
Rollock pioneered a humanistic curriculum emphasizing logical analysis (Ramist methods) for scriptural interpretation. As Principal, he prioritized students' spiritual development through daily worship, theological instruction, and moral guidance. His legacy includes over 40 international printings of works like Analysis logica in epistolam ad Hebraeos (1605), establishing him as a leading Reformed theologian.
He mediated the 1596 Kirk-King conflict and later became Minister of Greyfriars’ Kirk. His final requests included preserving Edinburgh University’s theological focus and appointing Henry Charteris as successor. His manuscripts, including Commentarius in primam beati Apostoli Petri Epistolam, remain in Edinburgh University Library archives.
