Robert Portass is an Assistant Professor of Early Medieval History at the University of Cambridge and Fellow/Director of Studies at Robinson College. He holds a B.A. in History and Modern Languages from Oriel College, Oxford, a postgraduate Diploma from Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, and a DPhil from Balliol College, Oxford. Previously, he served as Lecturer/Senior Lecturer at the University of Lincoln (2014-2024) and held fellowships including Leverhulme ECF at Oxford.
His research focuses on the socio-economic history of medieval Europe (c.800-1200), particularly Iberia, with emphasis on peasant economies, land markets, trade, taxation, and non-elite communities. His work takes a comparative approach to medieval social formations within broader Eurasian contexts.
Portass's publications demonstrate a consistent focus on medieval rural economies, peasant agency, and Iberian social structures, with recent work increasingly exploring interdisciplinary approaches to non-elite historical experiences. His scholarship contributes significantly to understanding economic behaviors and social dynamics in medieval Christian Iberia.
