Robert P. Yagelski is Professor of Educational Theory and Practice at the University at Albany and affiliated faculty in the Department of English. He directs the Program in Writing and Critical Inquiry and previously served as associate dean of the School of Education and director of the Capital District Writing Project.
He earned his PhD in Rhetoric and Composition from Ohio State University, establishing his foundation in writing pedagogy and composition theory.
His research explores writing's ontological dimensions and transformative capacity, analyzing adolescent writing errors, college students' analytical strategies, literacy as social practice, and writing as technology. This work bridges composition theory, critical pedagogy, and qualitative methodology to address sustainability crises through writing instruction.
Professor Yagelski has authored foundational texts including Writing as a Way of Being (2011) and Literacy Matters (2000), alongside textbooks and articles in top journals. Through the National Writing Project, he has mentored K-12 teachers while advising doctoral students in curriculum development and English education.
