Robert P. Wilder

Robert P. Wilder, MD, serves as Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Virginia (UVA) and is Medical Director of The Runner’s Clinic and UVA SPEED Clinic. He also directs the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Program. A former captain of the University of Dayton Cross Country Team, he joined UVA faculty in 1998 after completing medical school at UVA and residency at Baylor College of Medicine.

Dr. Wilder’s research focuses on running biomechanics and the physiologic and training effects of deep water running for athletes. He has contributed to clinical practice through his leadership in sports injury treatment, particularly for running-related conditions like Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, and stress fractures.

His clinical expertise includes treating sports injuries and musculoskeletal disorders, with a focus on non-surgical interventions. He has served as team physician for organizations such as FC Dallas, University of Texas at Arlington, and Reebok Elite, and currently works with Ragged Mountain Racing, Monticello HS, and the US Tennis Association.
