Robert P. Kirshner serves as the Clowes Professor of Science at Harvard University, based at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (60 Garden St., Cambridge). He is a pivotal figure in modern cosmology, renowned for leading the High-Z Supernova Search Team whose discovery of cosmic acceleration revolutionized our understanding of the universe.
His research centers on supernova cosmology and dark energy, with seminal contributions to mapping the universe's expansion history. Kirshner's work established supernovae as precision cosmological tools, directly enabling the discovery that earned the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics. He actively bridges theoretical frameworks with observational data through projects like ESSENCE and SINS (Supernova INtensive Survey).
Among his distinguished honors are the Wolf Prize in Physics and Gruber Prize in Cosmology for cosmic acceleration research, the Dannie Heineman Prize for sustained contributions to supernova studies, and the James Craig Watson Medal for astronomical excellence. His public scholarship includes the award-winning book The Extravagant Universe: Exploding Stars, Dark Energy, and the Accelerating Cosmos, translated into four languages.
As an educator, Kirshner teaches Harvard's general education course "Science of the Physical Universe 19: The Energetic Universe" and develops outreach content like the Annenberg Foundation's dark energy curriculum. He currently directs the TMT International Observatory (Thirty Meter Telescope project) and serves as Chief Program Officer for Science at the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, advancing global astronomical infrastructure while maintaining active Harvard research leadership.
