Robert Morrissey is a historian and author at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he holds professorships in the Department of History, the Program in Medieval Studies, and the American Indian Studies Program. He currently serves as Associate Dean for Technology and Online Learning in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.

Research Interests: Morrissey specializes in early American frontier history, environmental history, Atlantic World studies, and Native American history. His work explores intersections between ecological change, Indigenous power, and colonial dynamics in the Midwest. A recent focus is agricultural drainage systems and their environmental impact in the Corn Belt.
Recent Publications: Morrissey’s 2022 book People of the Ecotone examines Indigenous adaptation to environmental shifts in the tallgrass prairie region. His 2025 chapter in The Oxford Handbook of Midwestern History recontextualizes French colonial influence in the Midwest.

Projects: He co-founded the Environmental Studies of the Great Lakes book series and co-leads Reclaiming Stories, a collaboration revitalizing Miami and Peoria Indigenous cultural practices. Morrissey also directed the 2018-2020 Mellon Faculty Fellow initiative in Environmental Humanities.
