Professor Robert Meadows is a sociologist at the University of Surrey's School of Social Sciences, serving as Director of Research (Sociology) and Editor-in-Chief of the British Sociological Association's journal Sociology. His career spans over 25 years, beginning in the Human Psychopharmacology Research Unit before transitioning to sociology in 2003. He holds a PhD and has been recognized for teaching excellence, including a 2021 Faculty Supervisor of the Year Award.
Research focuses on sleep's intersection with technology and mental health, funded by £1.5M from bodies like the ESRC and Wellcome Trust. Key projects include adolescent sleep-mental health linkages and the global history of sleep. He leads the Surrey Sociology of Sleep Group and collaborates on UKRI-funded circadian mental health research. His work explores sleep inequalities, recovery from substance use, and digital health interventions.
Teaching includes modules on mental health, drugs, and health sociology. He pioneered integrating quantitative methods in undergraduate curricula (ESRC grant, 2012) and received a 2020 grant for teaching mental health during crises. Supervised PhDs address topics like care home sleep dynamics and homelessness.
