Robert Martin is the Walcott-Bartlett Professor and Associate Chair of Government at Hamilton College. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota and a B.A. from the University of Connecticut. His scholarly work focuses on American political thought, democratic theory, and the historical development of press liberty.

Martin’s research explores the intersection of republican theory, press freedom, and democratic institutions during the early American republic. His publications analyze the philosophical foundations of democratic dissent, the evolution of press liberty concepts, and the role of public discourse in shaping governance.
His recent publications include studies on James Madison’s press liberty arguments, comparative analyses of Habermasian and postmodern political theories, and investigations into the historical contexts of American democratic principles. These works span interdisciplinary approaches combining political philosophy, legal history, and media studies.
