Robert Marc Friedman is a Professor Emeritus at the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History, University of Oslo (UiO). He holds a BS from New York University (1971) and a PhD from Johns Hopkins University (1978). His career includes roles as Professor at UC-San Diego (1989–97), Director of Science Studies there (1991–93), and Professor at the University of Oslo (2010–19). He is affiliated with the Dramatists Guild of America and the Dramatists' Association.
Research focuses on the history of science and knowledge, university history, polar history, cultural history, and science communication through drama. Ongoing projects include plays like Banned in Berlin (on Einstein and Planck) and Chicago Whiz (on Laurens Hammond's electric organ). He has also explored Victor Moritz Goldschmidt’s legacy and Lise Meitner’s struggles as a female scientist.
Key awards include the LJBattan Prize (1993), Lise Meitner Prize (2006), and a Public Outreach Prize (2015). His works include The Politics of Excellence (2001) and Appropriating the Weather (1989). Friedman’s drama projects blend historical research with public engagement, addressing themes like gender in science, Nobel Prize controversies, and Arctic science history.
Collaborations include projects with physicists in Valencia and planned graphic novels based on Goldschmidt’s life. His research emphasizes the intersection of science, culture, and societal values, with a focus on dramatizing complex historical narratives for broader audiences.
