Robert Manning is Professor of Mathematics and Statistics and holds the William H. and Johanna A. Harris Chair of Computational Science at Haverford College, with office KINSC H207C and contact rmanning@haverford.edu.
His educational background includes a B.S. from Yale University, Ph.D. from Cornell University, and postdoctoral fellowships at University of Maryland College Park and EPFL.
Research focuses on:
- Equilibrium problems for elastic rods with intrinsic shape and self-contact, particularly for DNA cyclization applications
- Stability theories in calculus of variations extended to integrodifferential equations
- Computation of end-to-end probability density functions for elastic rods (collaboration with John Maddocks at EPFL)
- Interdisciplinary biological projects including AFM analysis, aggregation modeling, and viral hemorrhagic fever epidemiology
- Semiclassical quantum mechanics approximations from doctoral work
He teaches core and advanced mathematics courses including Calculus, Differential Equations, Linear Optimization, Scientific Computing, Analysis, and specialized applied mathematics topics at the 300-level.
Professor Manning maintains active collaborations with biological scientists and computational research groups, with ongoing work in DNA modeling and interdisciplinary applications of mathematical physics.
