Dr. Robert M. Gogal Jr. is Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Assistant Dean of Research at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. He holds a DVM from Virginia Tech (1992) and specializes in environmental immunotoxicology and autoimmunity.
His research examines the immunotoxic effects of environmental contaminants (lead, mercury, TCDD) on wildlife and experimental models, with focus on autoimmune disease mechanisms, prenatal programming of immune dysfunction, and reptile biomarkers of contamination. Dr. Gogal investigates molecular pathways linking toxicant exposure to immune dysregulation.
Publications demonstrate expertise in avian and reptilian toxicology, veterinary oncology, and endocrine disruptors. Recent work includes snake immunotoxicity models, bird lead exposure reviews, and rabbit pharmacotoxicology. His 2016 autophagy guidelines paper has been widely cited in cell biology.
Dr. Gogal teaches veterinary immunology, toxicology, and autoimmune disease courses. As Assistant Dean of Research, he directs the GVSP and supports research initiatives across the college.
