Dr. Robert Külpmann is a Researcher in the Department of Descriptive Linguistics of German at the Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität Mainz under Prof. Rita Finkbeiner's chair. His roles include academic research and teaching in theoretical and empirical linguistics. He holds a PhD from Bergische Universität Wuppertal (2019) on sentence-type effects in complement omission. His research focuses on valency grammar, construction grammar, and German syntax, particularly sentence independence and discourse pragmatics. He co-organized major conferences like the 2020 workshop on sentence independence and the 2023 panel on commentative discourse. Teaching includes courses on descriptive linguistics, syntax, and language in social media. His work bridges empirical methods with theoretical frameworks, notably in analyzing German wh-headlines and particle verbs through historical and experimental approaches.
Key research contributions include studies on argument omission mechanisms, the diachronic development of W-headlines, and the syntactic-pragmatic interface of commentative wenn-sentences. Collaborations include DFG-funded projects and international conferences. His publications span monographs, edited volumes, and peer-reviewed articles in linguistics and German studies.
