Peter Herbeck

Dr. Peter Herbeck is a researcher at the Department of Romance Studies, Institute of Romance Studies, University of Vienna. His academic journey began with an MA in English and Romance Linguistics from Bergische Universität Wuppertal, followed by a PhD in Romance Studies (Spanish/Linguistics) from Universität Salzburg. He has held postdoctoral positions at the University of Valencia (DAAD stipend), University of Wuppertal (Scientific Employee), and University of Cologne.

Herbeck’s research focuses on the syntax of Romance languages, particularly the syntax-pragmatics interface, morphosyntax of Valencian Catalan, discourse markers, and corpus linguistics. He employs quantitative methods and theoretical frameworks to analyze spoken language corpora, with a special interest in subject realization, finite/non-finite constructions, and grammaticalization processes.

He has contributed to 15 recent publications (2011–2024) on topics including null subject theory, control structures, discourse markers, and Catalan morphosyntax. His scientific award includes a DAAD Postdoc Fellowship. Herbeck has taught linguistics seminars in Spanish syntax, morphosyntax, and corpus methods at the University of Vienna, Wuppertal, and Cologne.
