معرفی
Robert Kofler is an independent group leader (equivalent to Associate Professor) at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, affiliated with the Institute of Population Genetics. He conducts interdisciplinary research at the intersection of genomics, evolution, and bioinformatics, focusing on the dynamics of transposable elements and the molecular mechanisms underlying adaptation.
His research interests center on understanding the evolutionary forces shaping genome diversity across species. Using computational simulations, experimental evolution, and novel sequencing technologies, his lab investigates how transposable elements invade and spread in genomes, how piRNA clusters regulate them, and how these processes contribute to adaptive evolution. A key aspect of his work involves developing new bioinformatics software to analyze complex genetic data.
Kofler's research is currently supported by multiple grants from the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), including projects on piRNA cluster size and transposable element abundance, long-read sequencing of transposable element dynamics, and experimental evolution studies. These grants indicate a strong, active research program with significant funding.
- FWF P35093: Does the size of piRNA clusters predict the abundance of transposable element insertions?
- FWF P34965: Unraveling the dynamics of transposable elements with long-read sequencing
- FWF P30036: Dynamics of a natural transposable element invasion in experimentally evolving populations
- FWF P29016: Optimizing novel methods for dissecting complex traits
He leads the Kofler Lab, which includes several PhD and Master’s students, indicating an active role in training the next generation of scientists. The lab is part of the broader research environment at the Institute of Population Genetics, contributing to the university’s strong research profile in evolutionary biology and genomics.
