Robert Kerestes, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Director of the Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Program at the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering. He earned his BSE, MSE, and PhD in Electric Power Systems from the University of Pittsburgh (2010-2014). His professional experience includes roles as a physical system simulation modeler at Emerson Process Management and service in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserves. His research focuses on power systems modeling, renewable energy integration, and innovative engineering education methods.
Education:
- PhD in Electric Power Systems, University of Pittsburgh (2012-2014)
- MSE in Electrical Engineering, University of Pittsburgh (2010-2012)
- BSE in Electrical Engineering, University of Pittsburgh (2007-2010)
Research interests span power distribution systems, smart grids, and pedagogical strategies for engineering education. His work emphasizes computational modeling (e.g., MATLAB, OpenDSS), renewable energy integration, and interdisciplinary sustainability projects. Recent publications highlight thermal modeling of distribution lines, microgrid economics, and tiered homework approaches to enhance student engagement.
He has presented at IEEE Rural Electric Power Conferences, ASEE Annual Conferences, and other venues. Current projects include solar PV integration on rural grids and collaborations with industry partners for sustainability initiatives.
