Robert K. Brigham is the Shirley Ecker Boskey Professor of History and International Relations at Vassar College, where he has served since 1994. He specializes in US foreign policy, particularly the Vietnam War, and teaches courses such as HIST 160: American Moments, HIST 279: The Vietnam War, and HIST 379: War and Adoption.
Education: BA from SUNY College at Brockport, MA from the University of Rhode Island, and PhD from the University of Kentucky.
Research focuses on US foreign policy dynamics, Vietnam War historiography, and Cold War diplomacy. He has authored op-eds in The New York Times (e.g., Lyndon Johnson vs. the Hawks, A Lost Chance for Peace in Vietnam), a Newsweek analysis on missing service members, and a review of Max Hastings’ Vietnam: An Epic Tragedy in the Irish Times. He has been frequently quoted in media discussions on contemporary conflicts, including Russia’s war in Ukraine.
In 2024, he convened a conference at the Vassar Institute for the Liberal Arts to analyze the Vietnam War’s legacy. His work bridges historical scholarship with contemporary geopolitical issues, emphasizing military strategy and political leadership.
