Dr. Robert-Jan Wille is an Assistant Professor at Utrecht University's Freudenthal Institute, based in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science. He previously held roles at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich and Radboud University Nijmegen, and engaged in research residencies at the Deutsches Museum and Research Library Gotha. His work focuses on the history of climate science, particularly meteorology and atmospheric physics between 1880–1970, examining how governments built global weather infrastructure. Key projects include a NWO Veni-funded study on Germany's mid-20th century meteorological dominance and a Langerhuizen Grant exploring Cold War-era meteorological rockets.
His doctoral research (Radboud University, 2015) analyzed Dutch biologists' state collaborations in the Netherlands and Indonesia, published as Mannen van de Microscoop. His research bridges fieldwork’s role in forming scientific-government alliances, spanning micro-level field studies to macro-level state technocracy. Awards include the NWO Veni (2019) and KHMW Langerhuizen Grant (2024).
