Robert J. Sampson is the Woodford L. and Ann A. Flowers University Professor at Harvard University, with affiliations at the American Bar Foundation and as founding director of the Boston Area Research Initiative (BARI). Previously, he taught at the University of Chicago. His research focuses on crime, neighborhood effects, urban inequality, and civic engagement, with notable works like Great American City (2024) and leadership in the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN). Sampson holds numerous fellowships, including membership in the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and received the Stockholm Prize in Criminology. His work bridges sociology, criminology, and public policy, addressing issues such as gun violence, environmental inequality, and urban mobility. BARI fosters collaboration between scholars and policymakers to address urban challenges.
