Robert J. Coplan is a Chancellor's Professor in the Department of Psychology at Carleton University, part of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo. His research focuses on solitude, shyness, and social withdrawal across the lifespan, with particular emphasis on developmental and cultural perspectives. Notably, he authored The Joy of Solitude (2025), a book exploring the psychological benefits and challenges of solitude. Coplan leads the SOLO Lab, which studies solitary behavior and its implications for mental health, academic performance, and social functioning. His work spans cross-cultural analyses, including studies in China, Norway, and Italy, examining how cultural context shapes attitudes toward solitude. He has advised numerous graduate and undergraduate students, contributing to over 150 peer-reviewed publications. Media engagements include features in The New York Times, Washington Post, and BBC.
Research highlights include longitudinal studies on social withdrawal subtypes in children, the impact of maternal beliefs on child socio-emotional adjustment, and the role of solitude in mitigating anxiety. Coplan’s findings emphasize the dual nature of solitude—its potential for creativity and reflection versus risks like loneliness. He advocates for tailored educational strategies to support shy students, informed by teacher surveys and classroom observations. Collaborations with institutions like the Pickering Centre for Research in Human Development further his mission to bridge theory and practice in psychological well-being.
