Robert Ian Whitfield

Dr Robert Ian Whitfield is a Reader in the Department of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Strathclyde. His work spans research, teaching, and leadership in systems engineering, with a focus on collaborative design, process optimization, product lifecycle management, and engineering risk. He has extensive experience in large-scale, multi-partner EU projects in shipbuilding and defense industries, and his research tools have been adopted in aerospace, defense, and new product development sectors.

His research interests include: design coordination, modular design, integration, resource management, process modeling and optimization, product data and lifecycle management, and engineering risk management—all under the umbrella of Systems Engineering. He has developed practical tools such as a modular design tool for hierarchical product structuring, a design process optimization tool for reducing rework, a collaborative design environment for distributed teams, and decision-support systems for complex engineering programs.

The recent articles highlight trends in ontological harmonisation, complexity in New Product Development, sustainability-oriented lightweighting, digital thread integration, and innovative pedagogical approaches in engineering education. These reflect a strong interdisciplinary focus bridging engineering systems, digital transformation, and sustainable design practices.

Dr Whitfield has supervised PhD students, including Ross Brisco, and has been Principal or Co-investigator on numerous research grants, such as the RAEng Visiting Professorship in Applied Systems Engineering Management, KTP projects with Spirit Aerostructures, and initiatives with NHS on systems engineering for healthcare. He is actively involved in professional service, serving on editorial boards (e.g., Design Science), peer-reviewing for journals, and organizing major conferences like the 25th International Conference on Engineering Design. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals through engineering education and sustainable design innovation.

He leads key teaching modules including DM103 (Technology Concepts), DM200 (Design 2), DM206 (Sports Engineering), and DM933 (Engineering Risk Management), all noted for high student satisfaction and pedagogical excellence. His teaching strategies are used as departmental best practice.
