Robert Howse is the Lloyd C. Nelson Professor of International Law at NYU School of Law. His work focuses on international economic law, including trade, investment, and finance, alongside legal and political philosophy. He co-founded the New York City Area Working Group on International Economic Law and contributes to the American Bar Association Working Group on Investment Treaties. Howse has held visiting roles at institutions such as Harvard Law School and the London School of Economics.
Education: LLM (Harvard Law School, 1990), LLB (University of Toronto, 1989 with honors), BA in Philosophy and Political Science (University of Toronto, 1982 with honors and distinction).
Research interests include globalization theory, legal philosophy, and the intersection of international law with human rights and environmental governance. His award-winning work includes the 2010 Global Policy Best Article Prize for 'Beyond Compliance: Rethinking Why International Law Really Matters' (co-authored with Ruti Teitel).
Teaching includes courses on WTO dispute settlement, history and theory of international law, and international financial architecture. He emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, integrating economics, science, and judicial ethics into legal analysis.
