Robert Howell Goldstein is the Haas Distinguished Professor at the University of Kansas’s Department of Geology. His research focuses on carbonate sedimentology, sequence stratigraphy, and diagenetic processes, with emphasis on reservoir quality prediction and fluid flow dynamics. Current projects include analyzing Miocene Spanish carbonates, Saudi Arabian Aruma Formation reservoirs, and fluid inclusion techniques for paleoenvironmental reconstruction.
Goldstein’s work bridges geology and petroleum engineering, addressing challenges in unconventional energy resources and reservoir analog modeling. He employs advanced methods like Raman spectroscopy and geostatistical simulations to study porosity preservation, fracture networks, and microbial influences on dolomite formation. His interdisciplinary approach integrates field data, laboratory analyses, and computational models to enhance understanding of hydrocarbon reservoirs and groundwater systems.
Scientific contributions include pioneering studies on ascending freshwater-mesohaline mixing dolomitization and the role of microbial surfaces in low-temperature dolomite precipitation. His group actively explores the Midcontinent’s hydrothermal fluid flow history and its impact on reservoir properties, contributing to both academic and industrial applications in energy exploration.
- Key Research Themes:
- Carbonate diagenesis and reservoir quality
- Fluid flow pathways and fracture mechanics
- Sequence stratigraphy and paleoclimatology
- Geophysical characterization of heterogeneous reservoirs
Goldstein has advised numerous graduate students on projects ranging from Permian reservoirs in Kansas to Cretaceous carbonates in Saudi Arabia. His work has been recognized through the Haas Distinguished Professorship and extensive industry collaborations.
