Robert Hodge is an accomplished conductor and educator currently serving as Professor of Conducting at the Royal College of Music (RCM), where he teaches conducting technique across multiple programs. He holds significant positions as Musical Director for the City of Cambridge Symphony Orchestra (since 2012), Aylesbury Symphony Orchestra, and Essex Symphony Orchestra, while also conducting for Stoneleigh Youth Orchestra and serving as Regional Director of Music for the National Children's Orchestras of Great Britain.
Robert studied at Royal Holloway, University of London before winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Music, where his conducting teachers were Peter Stark and Robin O'Neill. At the RCM, he prepared orchestras and served as assistant to renowned conductors including Lorin Maazel, the late Bernard Haitink and Vladimir Ashkenazy. Born in Pembrokeshire, he brings extensive professional experience to his educational roles.
Hodge's expertise spans orchestral conducting, music education, and youth orchestra development. He is responsible for all conducting classes at the RCMJD and teaches the 'Conductor as Educator' unit on the Masters Programme at the Royal College of Music, shaping the next generation of conductors through both practical instruction and pedagogical theory.
Robert maintains an active performance schedule with multiple orchestras across the UK, including upcoming concerts through the 2024/25 season with City of Cambridge Symphony Orchestra, Aylesbury Symphony Orchestra, Essex Symphony Orchestra, Stoneleigh Youth Orchestra, and the RCM Junior Department Sinfonia. His work with youth orchestras has led to notable performances at venues including Cadogan Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, and the Royal Albert Hall.
