He holds a Ph.D. (1981) and D.Sc. (1997) from the University of Adelaide, with extensive career milestones including roles as Tutor at James Cook University (1979), Lecturer and later Professor at the University of Tasmania (1980–1999), and ARC Senior Research Fellow at his current university (1999–present).
