Robert Hellyer is a Professor in the Department of History at Wake Forest University, where he has served since 2005. He is the Coordinator of the East Asian Studies Interdisciplinary Minor (2013–2023). His academic journey includes faculty roles at the University of Tokyo, Allegheny College, and postdoctoral positions at Harvard and the Smithsonian.

His research focuses on early modern and modern Japanese history, emphasizing foreign relations, global trade (notably the tea industry), and the Meiji Restoration’s global dimensions. Recent publications include chapters in The New Cambridge History of Japan (2023) and The Cambridge History of Global Migrations (2023), examining themes like Tokugawa migration policies and global nation-state formation.
