Robert Hatch is a Professor of History at the University of Florida, specializing in the Scientific Revolution and Early Modern European Intellectual History. He joined the University of Florida in 1978 and has held roles including Interim Director of the Center for the Humanities, Program Coordinator for the Paris Research Center, and Director of the Florence Program. His teaching spans antiquity to the mid-18th century, focusing on intersections between science, philosophy, classical studies, and cultural contexts like manuscript/print culture and communication networks.
He holds a B.S. (1970, Highest Honors) and M.A. (1972) in European History, and a Ph.D. (1978) in History of Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Notable awards include the Joseph H. Hazen Prize (2003) and CLAS International Educator of the Year (2009). His research involves major projects on Pierre Gassendi and Ismaël Boulliau, including editing their correspondences and authoring works like The Boulliau Correspondence and Boulliau’s Europe.
Recent publications (2007–2010) explore digital humanities, scientific thought history, and the Republic of Letters. He has lectured globally and secured grants from NEH, NSF, and the American Philosophical Society. His advising spans 100+ graduate students across disciplines like History, Philosophy, and Environmental Sciences.
