Dr. Robert Harland is a Professorial Reader in Urban Graphic Heritage at Loughborough University's School of Design and Creative Arts, where he also serves as Director of Staff Development. He previously held roles at Nottingham Trent University and the University of Derby, and spent over a decade in London as a practicing graphic designer and consultant.
He holds a PhD in Architecture (2011) from the University of Nottingham and a BA(Hons) in Information Graphics (1986) from Trent Polytechnic. His research explores urban graphic heritage's role in shaping place identity, with notable work on stadiums, colonial urbanism, and mental health informatics through the VIEWER project.
Key research interests include graphic design theory, heritage interpretation, and the intersection of urban design with cultural history. He has contributed to UNESCO heritage frameworks and co-created urban observatory models. His mental health work focuses on clinical informatics and antipsychotic prescribing disparities.
Rob has led academic governance roles, including Academic Director (2011–14), and pioneered design pedagogy reforms. His professional design practice spans branding, signage systems, and public art installations.
He has advised on heritage projects in South Africa, Italy, and Brazil, and maintains a research group focused on urban graphic heritage's economic and cultural impacts.
