Robert H. Byrne is a Distinguished University Professor at the University of South Florida's College of Marine Science. His research focuses on marine CO2 system chemistry, trace metal behavior in seawater, and in-situ instrumentation development. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Rhode Island (1974), an M.A. from Boston University (1971), an M.S. from DePaul University (1967), and a B.S. from the University of Chicago (1964).
His work includes pioneering studies on trace metals like platinum, palladium, yttrium, and rare earths, as well as the aqueous behavior of iron and strontium. Byrne has developed novel systems for measuring pH, total inorganic carbon, and alkalinity in marine environments, collaborating closely with the Center for Ocean Technology. His innovations in in-situ sensors have been deployed in oceanic studies worldwide.
Byrne leads multiple NSF-funded projects, including investigations into carbonate system variables and organic alkalinity impacts. He is a Fellow of the AAAS, American Geophysical Union, and National Academy of Inventors, and has received awards such as the USF Innovation Award for sensor technology advancements. He teaches courses like Chemical Oceanography and CO2-System Measurement Methods.
He has held leadership roles in committees such as the USF Chapter of the National Academy of Inventors and the College of Marine Science Dean Search Advisory Committee. Byrne's contributions to ocean acidification research were recognized by his 2012 AGU Fellowship.
