Robert Gibbs is a Professor and Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. He holds a Ph.D. and focuses on neuroendocrine mechanisms, particularly the effects of gonadal hormones on cholinergic systems in the brain. His research investigates how estrogen and testosterone influence cognitive functions, Alzheimer’s-related dementia prevention, and age-related neural decline. He directs the Cell Imaging Core and employs techniques like molecular biology, histochemistry, and behavioral analysis. Key areas include estrogen's impact on acetylcholine release, GPR30 receptor signaling, and menopausal models’ effects on brain chemistry.
Recent studies emphasize estradiol detection in brain tissues, enzyme activity profiling, and hormone agonist effects on brain metabolism. Gibbs has advised numerous students and collaborates on projects like the GEAR-UP graduate education program. His work spans over 100 publications, with contributions to understanding estrogen’s role in neuroprotection and cognitive enhancement.
