His work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches using charters, manuscripts, and inscribed objects to explore themes like multilingualism and the role of the written word in state formation.
His current book project, *Writing the Realm: the Written Word and the Rise of Wessex, c. 830–920*, examines how documentary practices shaped political authority in ninth-century England. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and contributes to projects like Canterbury Cathedral’s *Picture This* and the *Fontes Anglo-Saxonici* advisory board. Dr. Gallagher teaches early medieval topics at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and supervises research on Anglo-Saxon England, textual cultures, and Medieval Latin literature.
His publications span journal articles on topics like West Saxon charters, acrostic poetry, and Worcester’s documentary practices, alongside edited volumes such as *The Languages of Early Medieval Charters*. His work bridges textual analysis with material culture to transform understandings of early medieval societies.
