He is also a Senior Scientist and Scientific Director of the Apoptosis Research Centre at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute. Known for his groundbreaking work in apoptosis, he identified mammalian inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) genes and investigates their roles in diseases like cancer, neurodegeneration, and muscular dystrophy.
Research Interests:
- Modulation of programmed cell death (apoptosis) for therapeutic benefit
- Role of IAPs in immunity, neurobiology, and cancer
- Development of Smac mimetics and PROTAC derivatives for targeted therapy
Scientific Awards:
- Member of the Order of Canada (C.M.)
- McLaughlin Medal from the Royal Society of Canada
- Howard Hughes Medical Institute International Research Scholar (1997-2012)
- Distinguished Professor, University of Ottawa
Dr. Korneluk's translational research focuses on Smac mimetics for cancer treatment and their applications in neurodegenerative and muscular atrophy diseases. He leads a team at the Apoptosis Research Centre and has secured significant grants, including $7.6M in national funding.
