Robert Franklin is an academic and public historian affiliated with Washington State University (WSU), holding a dual appointment as Assistant Director of the Hanford History Project at WSU Tri-Cities. He manages the Department of Energy’s Hanford Collection (1945–1990), an archive documenting the Hanford Nuclear Site’s history, and directs the Hanford Oral History Project. His research focuses on 20th-century US history, with specialization in the Manhattan Project, Cold War, and environmental/waste management decisions. He collaborates with the National Park Service’s Manhattan Project National Historical Park and serves as president of the B Reactor Museum Association.
Educations: M.A. in Public History (WSU, 2014), B.A. in History (University of Hawaii Hilo, 2011).
Research emphasizes marginalized communities (Black/Latinx) in the Mid-Columbia region and Cold War nuclear legacy. He represents WSU Tri-Cities in the Roots of Contemporary Issues Program and the Resident Faculty Organization. His co-authored books include Nowhere to Remember and Echoes of Exclusion, analyzing Hanford’s sociocultural impact.
