Professor Robert Fassett is a Medical Director at the University of Queensland's School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences. His work focuses on chronic kidney disease (CKD), cardiovascular health, and the therapeutic effects of exercise and nutrition. He has led numerous clinical trials, including studies on high-intensity interval training (HIIT) for metabolic syndrome and diabetes, antioxidant therapies, and renal disease progression.
His research spans oxidative stress, inflammation, and vascular function in renal patients, with a strong emphasis on translational medicine. He has contributed to CKD surveillance in Queensland through the CKD.QLD registry and collaborated on international studies like the ADVANCE and HERO trials. His recent work explores e-health interventions like the Physical Activity Intelligence (PAI) program for cardiac patients.
Key publications include analyses of lipid-lowering agents in CKD, dietary interventions for oxidative stress, and biomarker studies in renal transplant recipients. He has authored over 170 journal articles and 3 book chapters, often alongside Jeff S. Coombes and other colleagues. Current projects include examining fitness-fatness interactions and optimizing dialysis protocols.
