Robert F. Paulson is a Professor of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences at Pennsylvania State University. He holds affiliations with the BMMB Graduate Program, Molecular, Cellular, and Integrative Biosciences (MCIBS), and the Integrative and Biomedical Physiology Program. His research focuses on mechanisms regulating tissue regeneration, particularly stress erythropoiesis in response to anemia and inflammation. He earned a BA in Biochemistry from Northwestern University and a PhD from UCSF, followed by postdoctoral work at Mount Sinai Hospital. Paulson’s lab investigates erythroid progenitor signaling, niche development, and the role of stress erythropoiesis in diseases like leukemia. He chairs the MCIBS steering committee and serves on multiple university committees. Notable awards include Phi Beta Kappa and the David C. Rae Memorial Fellowship. His work bridges basic science and translational research, with recent studies exploring selenium’s role in stress erythropoiesis and novel anti-leukemia therapies.
Research highlights include characterizing BMP4/Smad5 signaling in stress erythropoiesis, identifying macrophage roles in niche expansion, and developing murine models for inflammatory anemia. Collaborative projects target leukemia stem cells and explore metabolic pathways in stress erythropoiesis. His recent publications emphasize selenium’s effects on erythroid progenitors and GPR44’s role in myeloid leukemia reduction. Paulson mentors graduate students and maintains active lab collaborations across departments.
