Robert E. Richard, M.D., Ph.D. serves as an Academic Associate Professor in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at the University of Washington and Director of Hematology at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System. His clinical practice is based at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle, Washington, where he provides specialized hematology care.
Dr. Richard's research spans two major domains: the molecular mechanisms of myeloproliferative disorders and innovative approaches to HIV treatment through stem cell gene therapy. His work on myeloproliferative disorders focuses on understanding how Jak2V617F mutations and other gene pathways contribute to disease pathogenesis. In HIV research, he has pioneered the development of foamy virus vectors for genetically modifying blood stem cells to create HIV-resistant immune systems.
His clinical expertise encompasses general hematology with specialization in myeloproliferative disorders and sickle cell anemia. Dr. Richard maintains an active research laboratory at the Seattle Division of the VA Puget Sound Health Care System in the Beacon Hill neighborhood.
Dr. Richard received his M.D. and Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Maryland, Baltimore Veterans' Affairs Medical Center and Hematology fellowship at UW/Fred Hutch.
