Robert Douglas-Fairhurst is a Professor of English Literature and Tutorial Fellow at Magdalen College, University of Oxford. He holds a BA from the University of Cambridge (1990) and a PhD from Cambridge (1998). His research focuses on Victorian literature, with notable works exploring Charles Dickens and Lewis Carroll. Key publications include Becoming Dickens (2011, Duff Cooper Prize winner), The Story of Alice (2015), and Metamorphosis: A Life in Pieces (2023). He has held fellowships at Fitzwilliam College (1995) and Emmanuel College (1996), and was elected to the Royal Society of Literature in 2015. His editorial work includes critical editions of Peter Pan and A Tale of Two Cities.
Research interests span 19th-century biography, literary criticism, and children’s literature. His 2023 book Metamorphosis blends personal narrative with literary analysis, while earlier works dissect Dickens’ evolution and Carroll’s Wonderland. Articles and books reflect a focus on Victorian social history and narrative techniques. Upcoming projects include Look Closer: How To Get More Out of the Books You Love (2025).
Award highlights include the Duff Cooper Prize and multiple literary recognitions. His media appearances include BBC Radio 4’s Today and ABC Australia. Teaching roles span undergraduate and graduate supervision in English Literature at Oxford.
