معرفی
Robert DeVries is an Instructional Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Mississippi, within the College of Liberal Arts. He teaches Non-majors Introductory Biology and Fish Biology, contributing to undergraduate science education. His research is centered on fish ecology, life history, and conservation, with a strong emphasis on sturgeon species.
Dr. DeVries earned his B.S. in Marine Biology from the College of Charleston (1998), M.S. in Marine Biology from the University of Georgia (2006), and Ph.D. in Forest Resources from Mississippi State University (2020). His academic journey reflects a deep commitment to aquatic and fisheries sciences.
His research interests include fish life histories, age and growth analysis, trophic interactions, stable isotope ecology, and fin healing mechanisms. He focuses on both endangered and sport fish, employing non-lethal techniques to study population dynamics and physiological responses. His work supports conservation and sustainable fisheries management.
The recent publications highlight a consistent focus on sturgeon biology, including fin regeneration, osmoregulation, habitat use via chemical markers, and non-lethal tissue analysis. These studies integrate physiology, ecology, and conservation, demonstrating an interdisciplinary approach to understanding fish responses to environmental and anthropogenic stressors.
Although no specific scientific awards are listed, his research has been supported by grants from the USDA Agricultural Research Service, the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture, and the National Marine Fisheries Service. These funding sources reflect the applied and ecological significance of his work.
Dr. DeVries actively mentors students through research and teaching, though specific advisees are not named. He is involved in collaborative research across institutions, contributing to fisheries science and aquatic conservation. His work in Shoemaker Hall at Ole Miss includes both laboratory and field-based investigations.
