His research focuses on optimizing treatments for mood disorders, particularly depression, through personalized approaches. He investigates mechanisms of effective therapies, including identifying patient profiles that predict better outcomes for cognitive therapy versus medication. Key areas include developing the Personalized Advantage Index (PAI) to tailor treatments and studying therapy processes like sudden gains and alliance-building.
Education: BA in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin; Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Minnesota. Courses taught include Abnormal Psychology (PSYC 162), Seminar in Clinical Psychology (PSYC 709), and Advanced Practicum (PSYC 820). His lab emphasizes translating research into clinical practice, with a focus on improving access and efficacy of treatments, especially in under-resourced settings.
Research Interests: Mechanisms of psychotherapy effectiveness, prediction of treatment outcomes using demographic/genetic data, and implementation of precision medicine approaches. Current projects explore digital mental health interventions, AI applications in therapy, and cross-cultural mental health disparities.
Recent work highlights barriers to personalized therapy implementation, the role of urbanicity in depression prevalence, and global mental health equity. He has contributed to meta-analyses on treatment response and published extensively on sudden gains and therapy fidelity assessment.
