Dr. Robert Cuzner is a Richard and Joanne Grigg Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. He serves as Director of the Center for Sustainable Electrical Energy Systems (SEES) and Site Director of the Center for GRid-Connected Power Electronic Systems (GRAPES). Prior to academia, he spent 24 years in industry developing power systems for naval and industrial applications. His leadership roles include chairing the IEEE Industrial Drives Committee (2006-2008) and co-editing the IEEE Electrification Magazine.
Dr. Cuzner's education includes a PhD (2013), MS (1990), and BS (1988) in Electrical & Computer Engineering from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and Brigham Young University. His research focuses on DC power distribution architectures for naval systems, community microgrids, and industrial parks; microgrid protection using solid-state technologies; EMI mitigation for wide-bandgap semiconductors; and high-efficiency power electronic topologies.
His recent work emphasizes virtual prototyping for naval power systems, thermal optimization of SiC modules, and fault resilience in DC grids. He has contributed to standards development for shipboard power systems and pioneered adaptive protection schemes for inverter-based DERs. Collaborations include the UWM SEES/GRAPES labs and industry partners in naval and renewable energy sectors.
Dr. Cuzner is currently on sabbatical for Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semesters, focusing on advancing digital twin technologies and naval power system architectures.
