Robert C. Egnell

Robert C. Egnell is a Professor of Military Sociology and Leadership and Head of the Department of Security, Strategy and Leadership at the Swedish Defence University. He holds a Non-Resident Senior Fellow position at the Center for Security Studies (CSS) and the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security. His academic background includes a PhD from King's College London, alongside MA and BA degrees from Uppsala University and the University of Dar es Salaam.

His research focuses on peace and stability operations, encompassing state-building, security sector reform, counterinsurgency strategies, and gender dimensions in military operations. Current work explores redefining human security through the lens of state responsibility. Operational experience includes service as a Swedish Army Reserve Captain in Kosovo (1999-2000).

Prior roles include Senior Researcher at the Swedish Defence Research Institute (FOI), focusing on African security and civil-military relations, and Assistant Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Dar es Salaam. His notable publication Women and Gender Perspectives in the Military (2019) examines comparative gender integration in militaries globally.
