Robert Burrell is a Professor of Law at the University of Melbourne and holds the Professorship of Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law at the University of Oxford. He previously held academic positions at the Australian National University and King’s College London, and has been a Herbert Smith Visiting Fellow at the University of Cambridge, Visiting Professor at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, and Visiting Professor at the National University of Singapore.
His research focuses on intellectual property law, including copyright exceptions, trademark law, and interdisciplinary studies with historians, psychologists, and economists. He authored Copyright Exceptions: The Digital Impact (with Allison Coleman) and co-authored Australian Trade Mark Law (with Michael Handler). His work has been cited by numerous high courts, including the High Court of Australia, Federal Court of Australia, and European Court of Justice.
Burrell teaches courses such as Trade Mark Law and Trade Marks and Unfair Competition. He has consulted for Australian legal firms and contributed to litigation at the Australian Trade Marks Office.
