Jane Rawlings is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, University of Technology Sydney (UTS), specializing in intellectual property law. She has been with UTS since August 2013 and teaches in the Intellectual Property Program within the Professional Programs at UTS Faculty of Law.
Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Science (Hons) from the University of Sydney (1974-1979) and a Bachelor of Law from UNSW Australia (1982-1986).
Jane's primary research interests span multiple domains of intellectual property and digital law:
- Intellectual property law and practice in Australia and New Zealand, with focus on trade marks, copyright, designs, and patents
- Data privacy and security law across European Union, UK, and Australian jurisdictions
- The law of confidential information and trade secrets
- Artificial intelligence regulation and its legal implications
Her recent scholarly work demonstrates a clear trend toward the intersection of artificial intelligence and intellectual property law, particularly examining authorship in AI-generated works, copyright subsistence, and trademark implications. She has also maintained a strong focus on geographical indications, comparative trade mark law between Australia and New Zealand, and privacy law developments.
Jane has contributed to numerous government consultations and policy submissions, including work with the Australian Society for Computers and Law, The Productivity Commission, and IP Australia. Her expertise is regularly sought for submissions on intellectual property arrangements and regulatory frameworks.
As an intellectual property barrister, Jane combines practical legal experience with academic scholarship, bringing real-world perspective to her teaching of Trade Marks Law, Trade Marks Practice, Copyright Law, and Preparing for Intellectual Property Practice.
